Alegria - Rio de Janeiro - December 28, 2007
Unfortunately, unlike my best friends that find themselves in Rio right now, I'm in Montreal. Nevertheless they took the time to send me a mini review of the Alegria party, and I have to share it with you.
"The short is... you would have loved it! Everything was awesome: the music, boys and decor (the dance floor was like being at the bottom of a swimming pool: overhead was swimming lanes with beautiful mannequins swimming suspended in the lanes or diving!).
The show was a singer with dancers in individual boxes filled with water. With our VIP tickets, we had access to 2 private areas: one above the DJ high up where we ad a perfect view of the dance floor. And at 7 AM, a cruise ship full of little old American ladies arrived on the dock right beside the "chill out" lounge outside. What a sight for them: half naked guys making out and sketchy!
So Brazil is awesome. We loved Sao Paulo and Rio is better than we thought (if that's possible). We went for a Churrascaria tonight and had Caipirinhas on the beach watching the sunset (in our Havaianas and Sungas... :-) "
ps. although my friends had a great time, it sounds like Alegria Rio 2007 was affected by the problems they had in 2006. Attendance was not that great as organizers perhaps had expected.

Xmas Benefit @ Stereo - "DANS LA RUE" - December 23, 2007
Partying for charity, and I think we can do even more. The night was fun and very groovy, got the chance to dance to the tunes of several DJs, and it was all worth it. Too bad Danny Torrence only played for 45 minutes, and not taking anything from the other DJs, but Steve "Bear" Sas really made my night.
The place fill up a little bit by 4:00am, and I left the place at around 9:30am and the hard core Stereoheads were still there, dancing, and I guess losing some calories we all are going to gain tonight or tomorrow, depending when you celebrate Christmas.

Steve 'Bear' Sas & Hector Romero @ Stereo, December 15, 2007
I'll be short and to the point. Arrived at Stereo around 4:00am and the Bear was doing a fantastic job warming up the crowd, talk about Full Body Workout, I couldn't wait for Hector's set. 5:00am and no Hector, I thought maybe he didn't make it to Montreal because the Winter storm, but wait a second, the storm had just began at the time I woke up.
Don't know what time it was but finally Hector took control of the place, and then ... nothing. He went back to a "warm up" set, very disappointing because I really wanted to sweat as in a full body work out, but didn't get it at all. Lots of build ups but nothing after that. Waited and waited and finally I gave up at around 8:20am when I decided it was better to go down to Stereo bar and dance to the tunes of Danny Torrence.
Thank you Danny, you saved my night, that is what I call music. Left Stereo bar at around 2:00pm and the place was still rocking.
I really don't know what happened with Hector Romero, he is usually very good, but hey, everyone has their night off eh?

Cherry - December 14, 2007
First surprise of the night was to find out Cherry is located where the former Exotica bar (Gay Latin themed place) used to be. Second surprise was that everyone was talking it was a private party for a movie crew. Nobody told me it was going to be a private party - at this point I'm already thinking "where is Kamaka?" For those who don't know, Kamaka and I share the same birth day, and she was scheduled to be one of the DJs of the night.
Once the entrance issue was resolved was time to deal with coat check - yeap, it is still the same little room. They were kind enough to find us a spot for our coats and there we went searching for our party. The main room had a band playing (?), and we continued to the sketchy room in the back, or should I called the sketchy alley?
Very original hiding place, but we decided to move out of there towards the main room, and once again we were surprised by the change in tunes. Super cool breaks were playing and down the dance floor we went. Have no idea who was the girl spinning on the decks, and love the mirror from where you can see what is going on around the DJ area. I also loved the high tech lighting system in place - basically is this guy turning on and off the lights, and sometimes walking around with the little blinking lamp - seriously, I just loved it - keep in mind, the ceiling of this place is low, so there is no way they can add the super mobile lights system from Chez Dagorbert.
Probably it was 12:30am or so, when we saw a line of firemen walking into the place, and they went straight ahead to the sketchy alley. I wonder if someone was fast enough to warn the smokers. The Fire Department of Montreal must be complimented by the good looking guys they have hired - keep it up boys, and for the looks of it, I was not the only only impressed by the men power quality sent by the Fire Department.
The party continued, and the music is what I call back to the bases of house music. We could not stop smiling. By this time, a lot of the crew from the private movie party had left, leaving behind some actors (which I still don't know who they are but my friend insist they are famous). The place was super packed at the beginning, easing out a bit afterwards.
Kamaka was supposed to take over at 12:30am but there was some stuff happening, and I didn't get the chance to see her perform. The party continued until the volume went down and it was announced the police was in place and they had to count how many people were inside in order to let the party continue. Stereo déjà vu all over again for me.
My advise to the Cherry people, when the police is in place, do not try to make their job difficult, because at the end of the day they have the power to shut down the party, or let it continue. I don't think it helped the case that someone kept talking on the microphone about "the police does not want to inform us how they are going to count everyone" or that the lovely girl was allowed to play the drums (even if it was for only 5 seconds) while the police had requested to shut down the music.
Anyway, by 2:00am it was announced how the police was going to count us, by letting everyone out and in again - this is when we decided my birthday celebration was over, said goodbye and went outside chasing a cab.
Regardless of what happened, this was one of my best birthday celebration ever. I could not stop smiling, the vibe, the combination of people is just perfect. The age range is fabulous, and the music up beat. Loved the guy that came out to the dance floor with his trumpet, what a high it was when he followed the song being played.
Thumbs up to Cherry and if you haven't been there yet, make sure to write it down in your to do list.

Alain Jackinsky & Stéphan Grondin @ Stereo - December 1, 2007
I cannot start this review right at Stereo, the night continued for me at Parking, where Offer Nissim was spinning with his drama-theatrical moves. Great vibe of the place, and I feel horrible to say it was even better that I was unable to see him moving his arms up and down, because I spent most of the night dancing up in the mezzanine, right beside the whole in the wall Parking has built to increase the air circulation of the place.
Arrived at Stereo a little bit after 3:00am, super energized by Offer Nissim, and Alain Jackinsky was in the middle of his set. First time in the big room for this young talented DJ, and I was sure he was going to nail it with no problems. Here is the thing, maybe because I was still in a high with Nissim music, it was problematic for me to join a warm up set. Maybe it was me, but I thought Alain was slowly trying to find his way with the crowd.
I kept waiting for that music spot that would make me part of the night, but didn’t start feeling it until close to 4:00am. By them everyone from Parking and Unity had joined the dance floor, and you could feel the increased vibe of the place. I also noticed Alain started to change his style when people started to fill up the place, and by 4:00am the volume was perfect and the music had more Alain’s signature, which I have heard many times before. For the next hour or so he did the job I was expecting him to do at Stereo. This guy is going to go far, and how old is he again? Did I mention he is also cute?
Grondin took over at 5:00am and started his phenomenal set. It was a combination of old, new and the unknown for the entire night. I don’t know how many times I looked up and asked myself how does he do that to me? How can he put this big smile in my face by just playing the perfect music? It was not overdone, neither underdone, it was just perfect music, combine with superb mixing, and spiced up by the energy of the dance floor.
House music in different styles were invited to the temple by Mr. Grondin, and I gladly danced to every single one of the tunes, so much that my legs are still hurting even today. I would love to mention the names of some of the delicious tunes I heard during the evening, but I’m so bad in remembering and knowing names.
I do have to thank Stéréo for getting rid of the bar located in the dance floor area. I like seeing the darkness in the back of the room, and now the dance floor is once again fully available to what it was made for in first place. Darkness with match perfectly the tunes by Grondin.
Couldn’t stay too long because had people waiting for me, nevertheless I left the temple at around 9:30am fully satisfied with the music and happy with the night.. Grondin did a phenomenal job, and I definitely would like to see Alain Jackinsky back taking care of the night.
