First surprise of the night was to find out Cherry is located where the former Exotica bar (Gay Latin themed place) used to be. Second surprise was that everyone was talking it was a private party for a movie crew. Nobody told me it was going to be a private party - at this point I'm already thinking "where is Kamaka?" For those who don't know, Kamaka and I share the same birth day, and she was scheduled to be one of the DJs of the night.
Once the entrance issue was resolved was time to deal with coat check - yeap, it is still the same little room. They were kind enough to find us a spot for our coats and there we went searching for our party. The main room had a band playing (?), and we continued to the sketchy room in the back, or should I called the sketchy alley?
Very original hiding place, but we decided to move out of there towards the main room, and once again we were surprised by the change in tunes. Super cool breaks were playing and down the dance floor we went. Have no idea who was the girl spinning on the decks, and love the mirror from where you can see what is going on around the DJ area. I also loved the high tech lighting system in place - basically is this guy turning on and off the lights, and sometimes walking around with the little blinking lamp - seriously, I just loved it - keep in mind, the ceiling of this place is low, so there is no way they can add the super mobile lights system from Chez Dagorbert.
Probably it was 12:30am or so, when we saw a line of firemen walking into the place, and they went straight ahead to the sketchy alley. I wonder if someone was fast enough to warn the smokers. The Fire Department of Montreal must be complimented by the good looking guys they have hired - keep it up boys, and for the looks of it, I was not the only only impressed by the men power quality sent by the Fire Department.
The party continued, and the music is what I call back to the bases of house music. We could not stop smiling. By this time, a lot of the crew from the private movie party had left, leaving behind some actors (which I still don't know who they are but my friend insist they are famous). The place was super packed at the beginning, easing out a bit afterwards.
Kamaka was supposed to take over at 12:30am but there was some stuff happening, and I didn't get the chance to see her perform. The party continued until the volume went down and it was announced the police was in place and they had to count how many people were inside in order to let the party continue. Stereo déjà vu all over again for me.
My advise to the Cherry people, when the police is in place, do not try to make their job difficult, because at the end of the day they have the power to shut down the party, or let it continue. I don't think it helped the case that someone kept talking on the microphone about "the police does not want to inform us how they are going to count everyone" or that the lovely girl was allowed to play the drums (even if it was for only 5 seconds) while the police had requested to shut down the music.
Anyway, by 2:00am it was announced how the police was going to count us, by letting everyone out and in again - this is when we decided my birthday celebration was over, said goodbye and went outside chasing a cab.
Regardless of what happened, this was one of my best birthday celebration ever. I could not stop smiling, the vibe, the combination of people is just perfect. The age range is fabulous, and the music up beat. Loved the guy that came out to the dance floor with his trumpet, what a high it was when he followed the song being played.
Thumbs up to Cherry and if you haven't been there yet, make sure to write it down in your to do list.
