Halloween in Montreal 2009

Ladies and gentlemen, there are many things to do in this city for Halloween, and my understanding is that the weather will be in our side as well. Peter Rauhofer will be at Parking, and as usual I'm sure the place will be packed, I just hope the tickets are not as expensive as last weekend, because that could be a dangerous precedent to all partygoers.

Although I would love to be in Montreal to hit some of those hot parties, I will have to pass because I'll be in Los Angeles - you might be wondering what's going over there eh? Maybe one of these days I'll share with you more details, the important thing is that I'll be where I'm supposed to be this weekend.

Who will be at Stereo you might be wondering eh? I guess you will have to hit the hottest dance floor in town to find out, and Unity is bringing Danny Torrence to bright up the place.

There are more parties in town, I just haven't had the chance to do the research for you, because I must pack my bags now. Have fun, and whatever you make sure is safe okay?

Rapido (Amsterdam) - 5th Anniversary

and Ana Paula has been called to host one of the parties celebrating the 5th anniversary of Club Rapido in Amsterdam. She is everywhere now, no wonder why the "cariocas" are complaining she doesn't spend too much time in Rio anymore.

Montreal - Weekend 43

Another weekend is here, and this is no longer the one after the Black & Blue, which by the way, my understanding is that the circuit boys from Los Angeles did not enjoy very much, and the info has been passed on to the rest of the local boys.

Back to Montreal, and I believe Karma is one of the best options in town this Saturday, and I also think Stereo might ended up bringing a monster DJ this weekend. One thing that just surprised me was to see that the tickets for Offer Nissin at Parking are at CND 45.00 at the door - not sure about you, but I think that is a bit too much. Everyone knows that I love Parking, and it is one of my favourite non-afterhours club in Montreal, but I'm not willing to pay that much money to see Offer Nissim, actually to tell you the truth there are not many DJs that I'm willing to dish out that amount of cash.

If I decide to go out, I'm probably heading down to Karma, it has been a while since I've seen Danny Torrence in action, and I really enjoy that venue.

DJ Andre Garça - Rio de Janeiro

so boys and girls, I received this set from Andre Garça, a deejay from Rio de Janeiro, and I think you should add it to your music list. He is a DJ resident of E.NJOY, one of the most famous parties in Rio, and who knows, maybe we'll see him over here one of these days.

Black & Blue 2009 - Main Event @ Palais de Congres - October 11, 2009

Originally posted at MTLNIGHTS.COM

Black & Blue 2009 at the Palais de Congres and not at the Olympic Stadium, should I go? Or should I go to Stereo instead? Or just take it easy and stay home?

When you have friends coming over from New York City, just to be in Montreal for the B&B, it was clear there was no reason why I wouldn’t go eh? There was just a small problem, due to some scheduling issues I was required to be at work by 7:00am on Monday morning, which meant I would only able to dance to the tunes of Franco Fabi, Sasha and John Digweed, but I’m sure Dave Seaman and Stéfane Lippé were going to forgive me for missing their sets, the question was would I forgive myself for missing them?

11:00pm and I was at the door, picking up my media pass, and I must say I was treated as royalty by the volunteers working at the reception. They even walked me upstairs to show me around, and the girl was actually surprised I was media but I was not carrying a camera like the others before me.

Quick security check, and welcome to Bal en Blanc 2009, which due to the recession was scaled down to fit in one room of the Convention Center, unlike the two rooms people are used to see for the Bal en Blanc. There was nothing special about the décor, looking from the entrance you barely noticed the DJ booth, which was located at the right hand side of the room, but you did notice a major stage at the end, with a giant screen behind. At first the lights (single bulbs) hanging from the ceiling looked like something you would see in an outdoor Italian festival or something in the style. Then with time, the lights started to looked more like light up microchips, and at the end I actually liked what they had done with the lights, not overpowering the rest of the almost inexistent décor.

The DJ booth was simple, almost as if the idea was not to have the booth as the center of the party, which is fine with me, but I’m sure the equipment up there were good, at the least the music sounded great, specially in a big space not built for good acoustic like the convention center.

If I’m not mistaken, there were 4 small stages in the middle of the crowd, were people could come up and dance, and were also used during the evening for the min shows created for the night. I actually like those mini stages, it gives a different feeling to the party when you have the crowd dancing on them. Someone once told me, in some massive parties the organizers don’t allow this to happen due to liability issues.

Air Canada was very present all over the place, having a special lounge area at the end of the room, next to the main stage, which let me tell you it got super busy with the passing hours. I cannot talk about the bathroom situation in the general area because I did not follow the people upstairs, but I don’t think it was an issue this year.

It was nice to have access to the VIP area, but not really sure if it was really necessary. It was nice to have an area to sit down, but the Air Canada lounge looked nicer, and it was handy to have snacks through out the evening, great guacamole by the way, but other than that, didn’t find anything special about this specific area.

Franco Fabi played progressive electro, with some vocal house added in the mix, which I think went okay as a warm up for Sasha and Digweed, and I actually enjoyed his set, I only think his set should had ended right before the first show. Lot of people, including me, thought that’s when the next DJ was going to take over, but after looking at my watch I realized we had to keep waiting for them a little bit longer.

Finally the expected duo of the night was announced, Sasha and Digweed, and I was told to expect a gradual built up in the music, and that was exactly what happened. Out of the two, my favourite was Digweed, he played exactly what I wanted to hear, a hard sexy proggy, with minimal influences, and splashed with nice techy tunes, which progressively got better and better. Sasha on the other had, which I expected to be better than Digweed, went a little crazy by the end of his set. I also liked the fact those two gave even some diva-tribalish type of music to the crowd, I guess you can’t go wrong in dropping some of those tunes to this crowd eh?

Can’t talk about what Dave Seaman and Stéfane Lippé did because I was no longer in the premises of the building, but my understanding is that Dave Seaman might had stolen the show, and that Stéfane Lippé was actually able to keep up the energy.

The crowd was interesting, much more diverse that previous years, and there were less customs as well, but there was no lack of beautiful people, both men and women. In general it was a nice vibe all along, even coming from those that were not enjoying the music because it was not their expect Black & Blue music style.

You must have noticed that in the last 2 editions of the Black & Blue, there was a tendency of introducing a type of music that usually is not associated with gay events (non diva, non vocal, not too happy), and this year is probably the first in which musical talented invited is totally concentrated in the “straight” side of the business. Yes, I understand there are some people that don’t like to label music as being gay or straight, but the reality is that there is still that divide, which I hope will keep blending more and more into one. I applaud the BBCM for taking a risk in moving their event into new directions, and I just hope their crowd is able to understand and follow their new vision, otherwise I can see the House Room at the Bal en Blanc becoming bigger and bigger. Just make sure to add some décor next year okay BBCM?

Overall, I had a good time, and did what I do when I go to a party, I danced. The event did not leave with a wow in my mind, neither inspired me to say great things about it, but I enjoyed it, and for the looks, there were another couple of thousand people that thought the same, and it was nice to see many first timers this year.

Stereo Saturdays

Here is a suggestion to Stereo, everyone knows I consider Stereo to be my second home, and I just love the place, but I'm having second thoughts about the whole surprise DJ on Saturdays, where the DJ is only announced when you are on the dance floor.

It is an interesting concept, but I would hate to see one of my favourites DJ spinning on a Saturday night and because I didn't know about it, I missed it big time.

Stereo, I don't mind about the whole idea of the surprise DJ, but what about dropping some hints for us to figure out? The tips don't have to be obvious, but at least give us an idea what to expect.

On a final note, please bring Ana Paula to Stereo, and because I know you won't announce her due to the whole surprise DJ thing, bring her on a Friday or Sunday, this way you are assured to have a super full house.

Love (((Patius)))

Ana Paula @ Parking - October 10, 2009

Did you notice there was no David Morales @ Parking review last weekend? The reason why I decided not to write anything was because I really didn’t have too many things to say, and when I don’t feel that a DJ has excited me or inspired me on the dance floor, then the same thing will be when I’m seating in front of my computer to write a review. David Morales could have given us the best party ever, instead he showed us what to if we want to chill out. Don’t take me wrong, he had some good moments, but I wasn’t looking for moments, I was looking for a good night of dancing.

Fast forward one week and here we are, Black & Blue weekend, and Ana Paula decide to show the boys how is done. By the way, I must say Ana’s decision to exit The Week International as a resident DJ probably has been one of her best decisions ever. I keep looking around and she is playing non stop in North America since, and tonight she will be spinning once again in New York City with Peter Rauhofer.

Ana Paula gave us what I expected from David Morales last weekend, an incredible party from beginning to end. She came out strong, radiant, secure, and I’m amazed on how much her style has grown since the first tine I heard her in Montreal a while back. I remember I wrote once that I felt as if she was spinning just for you, and this was so true last night. Every time I looked up, she was there working her magic to make me, and I say “me” because this is really how I felt, to make me feel special on the dance floor.

The music Ana Paula is playing now is a great mix of the best Brazil has to offer combined with best of North America, her sound has mature and it is no longer the expected Brazilian tribal or the super happy diva vocals, it is just a perfect combination of great house music. If you were expecting an all night diva vocals probably you must be feeling a little bit disappointed, and if you were after the tribal sound, then the same is true for you. If you went to Parking expecting to have a good time, and you were open to whatever style of music was going to be delivered, then you probably are feeling very happy to have chosen to go out last night.

By the way, really loved the Shakira’s Wolf mix she dropped, and the way she was lifting the energy of the dance floor. You can tell it is a long weekend because there were so many out of town-ers last night.

It was a very nice vibe, easy going, sexy and at the same dark, similar to what the style of music Ana Paula was spinning. By the end of the night, there was a song playing, and the lyrics were something about Saturday night, the camera of rolling and Ana started to sing along and everything was been broadcasted thru the screens, that was an awesome moment.

If I’m not mistaken this is Ana’s first time at the new Parking, and I had the chance to exchange some words with her and what a great mood she was on, and I’m pretty sure she is going to rock the party in New York City, Peter should watch out because she might actually steal the show. The last song of the night I think was Celebration by Madonna, and if you asked me, this has been one of her best performances so far in Montreal. Alain Jackinsky also delivered an amazing warm up set.

Ana Paula, I want to have your children girl.

Canadian Thanksgiving Weekend 2009

The Thanksgiving long weekend is here boys and girls, and there are many activities to chose from, specially if you want to party. My suggestion for the upcoming weekend are the following:

To tell you the truth, I would love to go to Stereo for Victor Calderone on Monday night, but due to my work schedule I won't be able to be there.

Trindade - Brazil

well boys and girls, Los Angeles is waiting for me again, and there is a big chance that I shall be in Paris for new year's eve, and I was looking around and I think next year I'm probably going to be doing a small road trip to this relatively unknown place in Brazil called Trindade. Brazilians love this place, and recently more and more foreigners are falling in love with this small town as well.

West Hollywood Hallowen 2009

Just recently I learned that West Hollywood has one of the largest adult outdoor Halloween celebrations of the world. The famous Santa Monica Boulevard is closed off for traffic between Doheny and La Cienega, and sounds like people go really crazy with the customs, so not recommended for kids or for those that might be offended by simple things of life.

There is a possibility that I might be in Los Angeles for Halloween, and if I'm then I'll make sure to take some pictures for you guys.
